Chapter 2 - Marketing Through Communication Channels
In the previous chapter, Yaro establishes that preeminence is the key ingredient - but without communication, no-one will know about you or your site so it will be impossible to establish pre-eminence..
Here’s an interesting quote from the beginning of the chapter:
“Expertise, combined with distribution is all you need to make a ton of money on the Internet”
It’s true. Actually - I have a somewhat cynical confession - I don’t even think you need expertise. There are many people on the internet, who are selling what amounts to recycled rubbish, and also there are smarter people who are paying someone else to create good quality content - but the thing they both have which creates their personal success - is the distribution - the marketing. Maybe it’s the expertise in creating rubbish, or finding others to create good content we’re talking about.. ok - I’ll be quiet.. Back to the Masterplan..
Yaro goes on to talk about communication channels - ways to connect with people, let them know about you. Now, I’d like to state the obvious here for a second - the Internet is FANTASTIC for this. There, done now.. sorry Yaro..
We look at great examples of communication channels that Yaro has used and still does, including email lists (and system to use to build the list), building relationships, blogging, pay-per-click, joint ventures, and affiliate marketing (one of the biggest and easiest earners for an established site).
It mostly comes down to marketing, and the sales funnel. Without marketing there’s no business, and no customers.
- as a personal comment - I think social media marketing needs a complete section to itself, it’s a very powerful way to build exposure these days..
- also, and maybe it’s a bit technical, but testing is very important - and very easy these days with tools like google’s website optimiser, crazyeggs visual click mapping etc.
